Do “ Lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?
My friend Mary was born on June 13, 1986. She is always dissatisfied with her birthday because 13 is a bad number. A lot of people believed good numbers bring good luck and bad numbers bring disaster. So, 13,4 and other “ bad ” numbers are wiped off from cards, lists, menus, etc.
I think numbers have noting to do with luck. Numbers are created for counting. There is no relationship between a certain number and one’s fate. There are many people who succeed in spite of “ close relationship ” to bad numbers. There are also a lot of people, who should have been blessed by “ lucky ” numbers, involved in accidents. Take my friend Mary for example, she achieved a good study at many tests and got good reputation in her career.
In a word, numbers are numbers. They stand for nothing. Numbers have nothing to do with luck.
听力录音文稿 第一节 （Text 1）
M：Do you really want to go to Egypt？
W：Yes，I really want to go there！I’m looking forward to seeing the Pyramids and the Neil.
M：How are the restaurant prices here？
W：Oh，it’s not cheap but not very expensive. You can have a nice lunch for about＄6.
M：What’s for lunch？
M：It smells good.
W：Thanks. I hope it tastes as good as it smells.
M：Whose membership-card is that？
W：I’m sure you can’t guess. Look at the photo.
M：Let me see. It’s Tom’s！
W：Right. The photo doesn’t look like him，does it？
M：No. But my photo doesn’t look like me，either.
M：Shall we go to the concert this evening？I have two tickets.
W：Oh，sorry. I’m afraid I can’t. I’m seeing my Dad off at the railway station at 8：00.
第二节 （Text 6）
M：Excuse me，have you got a“New Concept English”Book Ⅲ？
W：No，I’m afraid we’ve completely sold out.
M：Oh，too bad. Do you have“English For Today”Book Ⅲ？
W：Yes. One moment and I’ll check. Oh，here you are.
M：Great！How much is it？
M：Okay. I’ll take it.
W：Hi，nice to hear from you. Where are you？
M：I’m in Mexico. I came here on Friday. I have to stay here for four days.
W：Really？What’s the weather like？
M：It’s hot and sunny. How are things with you？
W：The same as usual. Cold and rainy. When will you be back？
M：I’ll be back tomorrow.
W：Okay，see you then.
M：Fine. Take care！
M：Good morning. What’s your name？
W：Good morning. My name is Helen.
M：Do you have a job now？
W：Yes，I’m a secretary now.
M：How long have you worked as a secretary？
W：For five months.
M：Why do you want a new job？
W：The one I have now is too far away from my home.
W：We need a good secretary. Can you type？
W：Oh，yes. How much does this job pay？
M：Fifty dollars a week.
W：What are the hours？Eight to four？
M：That’s right. And you get two weeks of vacation.
W：Can I start right away？
M：You have to take a test first.
W：Why，hello，Tom. You are always welcome at my house. It’s been years since you’ve been here，hasn’t it？
M：Yes，it has. I used to live on the Martin’s farm.
W：Oh，the farm is gone. A modern factory has been built there.
M：You don’t say. Well，that’s progress.
W：They have built a huge tower on our beach，too.
M：There are plenty of other beaches，aren’t there？
W：I suppose so. What are you interested in doing tonight，Tom？
M：I’d like to go to the theatre. It’s still there，isn’t it？
W：Oh，no. They tore it down to make a parking lot.
I thought my new job was great，but on my first day，everything was wrong. First I slept late. Then I caught the wrong bus. I arrived at the factory at nine instead of eight-thirty. My new boss was very angry. He taught me what to do in a hurry. All I had to do was to watch a machine. It filled bottles with perfume.
Then I pushed a button and sent the bottles to another worker. At lunch，my boss asked me to buy him a sandwich. I bought a sandwich，but I dropped it and stepped on it. I bought another sandwich. Then I didn’t have enough money for my own lunch. At the end of the afternoon，I felt very hungry and tired. I didn’t want to see another bottle of perfume again in my life. The next morning I arrived on time…and quit！Yes，I left the factory and didn’t work there any longer！
